Abstract
This study aims to identify the direct effects of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), corporate governance, ownership concentration, and financial reporting quality on investment efficiency. This research also examines whether IFRS has an indirect effect on investment efficiency via financial reporting quality. It argues that IFRS adoption, corporate governance, ownership concentration, and financial reporting quality can enhance investment efficiency, as these are factors that can improve the quality of accounting information and reduce agency costs. This study analyzes the impact of IFRS adoption and financial reporting quality on the effects of corporate governance on investment efficiency. The research sample used comprises listed companies from five ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand) for the observation period 2010–2012 with 1,588 firm-year observations. Unlike previous studies, this study uses a continuous variable to measure the level of IFRS adoption at country level by measuring IFRS adoption based on survey results from the IFRS Jurisdiction Profile. Another difference between this and previous studies is that this study considers corporate governance at firm level as well as at country level. The results of the research show that IFRS adoption, corporate governance, and financial reporting quality have direct positive effects on investment efficiency. However, this study has not been able to prove an indirect influence of IFRS adoption on investment efficiency. The results also show that IFRS adoption and financial reporting quality do not affect the relationship between corporate governance and investment efficiency. Apparently in ASEAN this role does not rely solely on international standards-based financial reports because the monitoring process may be supported by internal financial and non-financial reports. Corporate governance at country level has a substitution effect for IFRS adoption in improving financial reporting quality.
